Exotic Perennial Plants

Welcome to Plant Delights Nursery at Juniper Level Botanic Gardens. We are a private research and display botanic garden located near Raleigh, North Carolina (USDA Hardiness Zone 7b). Our retail mail order division allows us to make the best perennials from our trials available to gardeners around the world, some of which were developed here, some from our plant explorations, and others from breeders around the world. Between 1988 and 2010, Plant Delights Nursery introduced over 500 new perennial plants to US horticulture. In 2002, we were honored to be recognized by the American Horticulture Society for our lifetime of work in commercial horticulture. This image gallery is but a sampling of the great perennial plants available for gardeners around the world. We do not carry all plants pictured at any one time, but since our mission is to educate and inspire, we hope these images and the linked articles below will expand your garden horizons and interest. You will find an array of other interesting information and fascinating perennials throughout our website ... thank you for taking time to visit.

If you're looking for some exotic perennial plants to add to your garden, you've come to the right place. Since 1988, Plant Delights Nursery, Inc. has offered some of the most unusual plants for sale in the industry. We are always trialing the newest rare plants for sale to evaluate their habits and garden worthiness. Depending on your definition, exotic plants could be those originally from another country, or simply something that is strange or unusual in appearance or habit.

While many companies will offer an exotic plant for sale, few actually take the time to grow exotic plants themselves and therefore cannot give you accurate cultural information and tips so that you too can successfully grow that exotic plant. We offer a large collection of exotic perennial plants that are non-native, yet are perfectly suitable for many climates here in the U.S.

Once a gardener has made the decision to buy perennials rather than repeatedly buying annuals every year, it is important that the consumer is making an informed purchase in order to be successful. When you are looking for unusual plants for sale, some important factors to consider are zone (will these be perennial plants in MY zone?) and cultural requirements (sun/shade, soil & moisture requirements). Since our botanic garden serves also as a research facility, we are able to trial a varied list of exotic plants, which allows us to disseminate first-hand knowledge of how each unusual plant will grow best. There's nothing worse than buying an exotic plant only to have it take over your garden! Then it's not an exotic plant, it's an invasive plant! We also work with other sites around the country to evaluate how exotic plants will perform in other zones as well.

If you're bored by the perennial plants that you've been growing and want to find some rare plants for sale, please take a look at our website. You can buy perennials such as Agave, Bletilla, Colocasia, Curcuma, Epimedium, Farfugium, Helicodiceros, Hedychium, Lycoris, Musa, Polygonatum, and Zingiber. There's an exotic plant for every taste! We promise to continue offering the most unusual plants for sale so even the savviest gardener can buy perennials new to them.
